2008 Thailand Raptor Watch Festival & Weekend Hawkwatch

The 7th Raptor Watch Festival is scheduled for the 3-5th October 2008 in Chumphon Province, the gateway to southern Thailand. Please join us to greet thousands of passing raptors as they head to their destinations in Malaysia and Indonesia.

Anyone wishing to join this event should contact Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua for details: bnternstar@gmail.com

Additionally the Weekend Hawkwatch will once again take place on weekends between the 25th September and 9th November at its regukar site at Radar Hill, Prachuab Kiri Khan Province. All are welcome to join.

2007 Weekend Hawkwatch Results
 

A total of 68,632 migrating raptors were counted throughout October at the Radar Hill watch site in Prachuab Kir Khan province. The peak count for Black Baza was 32,790 on the 20th October, the peak for Grey-faced Buzzard was 467 on the same date. On the 9th October the peak counts for Oriental Honey-buzzard and Chinese Goshawk were 1, 507 and 2, 980 respectively.

2007 Weekend Hawkwatch at Radar Hill

Once again, this autumn, the weekend hawkwatch will take place at Radar Hill, behind the Khao Pho Highway Service Area in Prachuab Kiri Khan province: Radar Hill. The raptor watching events will take place on weekends between September 21st and November 4th.

In addition to the raptor migration counts, Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua of the Thai Raptor Group will be trapping and ringing passing raptors with expected species being Japanese Sparrowhawk Aciipiter gularis, Chinese Sparrowhawk Accipiter. soloensis Grey-faced Buzzard Butastur indicus.

2006 Raptor Watch "A Success"
 
A total of 56,988 migrating raptors were counted over the weekend of 30th September to 1st October. Nine species of migratory raptors were identified: Chinese Sparrowhawk, Japanese Sparrowhawk, Oriental Honey Buzzard, Osprey, Black Kite, Eastern Marsh Harrie, Pied Harrier, Common Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon. 2006 Thailand Raptor Watch Festival & Weekend Hawkwatch
 

This autumn the Thai Raptor Group are holding two raptor watch activities to observe the southerly migration of raptors as they come through the Isthmus of Kra bottleneck:

  • Thayang Municipal Adminitration, Chumporn Province and Thai Raptor Group (TRG) are the joint co-ordinators of the 2006 Thailand Raptor Watch Festival, to be held on the weekend of September 30 - October 1 in Chumporn Province, southern Thailand. The count will continue throughout the whole of October led by the principal counter, Mr. Chukiart Nualsri. Birders who are interested in the raptor watch at the Chumporn site are encouraged to join and may contact Mr. Chukiart at bntern@yahoo.com.

  • The Thailand Weekend Hawkwatch at Radar Hill, Prachuab Kirikhun Province, will be a weekly raptor watch and count which will take place on the weekends from September 23 to October 31, except on the weekend of Raptor Watch Festival; the weekend hawkwatch will be organized for October 2-3 that week so that the two events do not clash. For those who wish to join the watch at Radar Hill, please contact Chaiyan Kasorndorkbua at fvetchk@ku.ac.th or trogon@gmail.com.
